Sometimes, not often but sometimes, you just gotta smile

I usually post on this blog when something makes me so mad I can’t stay silent.  But occasionally a news story makes me smile so much I can’t hold it inside.  (The fact that this particular story is really five years old tells you how rare an occasion this is, but at least it does happen.)  The basic story is this:

Bryan Thompson, a 14-year-old autistic boy, was handcuffed by police and suspended from Colonial Forge High School for running down the sidelines of a high school football game at halftime wearing a banana costume.  Principal Karen Spillman recommended that Thompson be kicked out of school for the entire year.  Thompson’s outrage at the punishment was shared by his fellow students, who began creating yellow t-shirts that read, “Free Banana Man!”  So Spillman banned the shirts, began confiscating them, and sent students to detention for supporting their classmate.  That’s when the American Civil Liberties Union got involved, and when a judge told the principal that her actions were unconstitutional.

Eventually Thompson was out of school for two weeks.  Oh, and BTW, Spillman was forced to resign.  So let’s hear it for Bryan Thompson, who at 14 was still smarter than a high school principal.

Be seeing you.
