What was learned from the ACORN scandal

In 2009, James O’Keefe. a dyed-in-the-wool Republican operative, sprang an undercover film on the country supposedly showing that employees of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) were, at the same time, incredibly stupid and outrageously dishonest.  It didn’t take long before the truth came out: the film, purporting to show a prostitute getting IRS advice from an ACORN employee, was heavily doctored and nothing in it was what it seemed.  But that didn’t matter.  What mattered was that it was great theater and indirectly reflected badly on the black president.  So the film was shown ad infinitum until Republican politicians started shouting on defunding (removing public assistance) ACORN.  Although that action (passing a law that singles out an individual organization) was actually illegal, many states managed to pull it off.  ACORN could have fought it, but by then the organization’s reputation was destroyed.  Even today, after all the brouhaha has passed and everyone now admits (if cornered), that ACORN never actually did anything wrong, the word ACORN is considered terminally tainted.

Why did the GOP consider ACORN to be an important target?  Because, out of the many services that they offered, one was voter assistance.  If you wanted to vote, but either didn’t know how to register or had run into trouble registering, ACORN would help you.  And, since rich people don’t have any trouble registering and poor people do (and poor people vote Democratic more often than Republican), ACORN needed to be stopped.  And so it was.

That brings us to the current Planned Parenthood fiasco.  The GOP has widely published a film showing what evil demons everyone who works for Planned Parenthood must be.  Even though the film has already been shown to have been produced, not by Planned Parenthood as indicated by the film, but by the GOP who played fast and loose with an editing booth, it has caught on.  It’s now being shown up and down the dial, just like O’Keefe’s film was.  And it’s having the same result.  Already politicians are calling to defund Planned Parenthood based solely on this film.

So, what was learned from the ACORN scandal? Well, the GOP learned that if you repeat a lie loud enough and long enough, it will not matter how ridiculous it is.  The Liars will get what they want — eventually.  What did the Democrats learn?  Not a damn thing, apparently.

The only way to fight such tactics is to repeat the truth, loudly and often, and force the politicians to admit the truth before they get what they want.  Because the Republicans are not going to stop trying to have everything their own way — ever.  And believe me, if you think you don’t like living in the Village now, wait until they finally kill all dissent.

Oh, and just a reminder: Iraq was behind the 9/11 attacks, the war won’t last six months — oh, and never forget, Benghazi!
