It continues to be more and more difficult to tell reality from satire. Chelsea Manning has been threatened with indefinite solitary confinement for daring to have a tube of toothpaste with an expired “use by” date. That rebel! And the military is incensed that some people think they’re harassing their most famous prisoner. But they insist that it had nothing to do with finding a copy of the US Senate report on torture in her cell. Nope, that wasn’t it at all. It was that “Vanity Fair” issue about Caitlin Jenner. Yeah, that was it. Well, that and the toothpaste. Oh, and for being disrespectful to the military. Apparently if you ask to see your lawyer when a prison officer is “interviewing” you, you might as well have spit on the flag.
Well Ms. Manning, you did ask for it, you know. As you get up to face each new day, remember that you did what you did for the sake of all of us in the Village. And try to ignore the fact that most of us are ignoring your sacrifice just like we’re ignoring the war crimes you exposed.
