We’re not dead yet!

Back in the sixties and seventies, there were people like Rachel Carson and Frances Moore Lappé who worried that mankind might be passing the tipping point at which our planet could comfortably sustain life.  Well, that was half a century ago and we’re still here.  However, that doesn’t mean we didn’t pass the point of no return, just that we haven’t reach endgame yet.

A new generation of scientists have also decided that we might be in trouble.  Calling the new studies “Planetary Boundaries“, they define it as “the outer limits of change to the Earth’s system that we think is tolerable to maintain good conditions for civilization.”  In other words, “Here’s the line.  Cross it and you die.”  This group is more optimistic than the old guard however.  They think we’ve only exceeded four out of the nine boundary markers.

So, about half, then — is that it?  We’ve only destroyed half of what we need to continue to occupy this ball of mud?  Thank goodness.  For a minute there I was worried.
